Tips for washing problematic short hair breeds (Bulldogs, Frenchie, Chihuahua)

Dogs categorized under the SHORT HAIRED classification produce sebum at a rate 30% higher than their long-haired counterparts. This increased sebum production is a means of protection since they lack a bushy coat. Essentially serving as a form of natural lubricant for the skin and fur.

Do not Degrease: The standard grooming approach for these breeds should be sebum regulation rather than elimination. It is imperative to utilize correct shampoos and conditioners specifically designed to replenish the natural oils in the skin and coat. Practices of "degreasing" do not address the underlying issue and may, in fact, exacerbate the condition.

Bathing schedule: Ideally, every three weeks or, at a minimum, monthly. As groomers, it's important that we have a thorough understanding of the unique requirements associated with short-coated breeds, given their popularity among clientele and the pressing demand for effective skin care solutions.

Shampoo & Condition: A well-formulated shampoo, capable of breaking down yet regulating sebum, should be used alongside a conditioner that maintains an optimal balance of emulsifiers and humectants

Advocate: Groomers should advocate against the shaving of short-coated breeds as a solution for shedding or for easier treatment of skin conditions. To remove an already compromised coat leaves the skin unable to regain balance.
